Babywearing In The Summer
First and foremost, dressing your baby appropriately for the weather is key. Choose lightweight materials and natural fabrics that will help keep your baby cool and comfortable on warm days. As long as they're dressed sensibly for the weather, and you take care to keep them out of direct sunlight for long periods of time, baby will be just fine!
Next, but crucially, avoid exposing your baby to direct sunlight for extended periods of time, as this can cause discomfort and even sunburn. It's important to remember that babies under six months old have super sensitive skin and should not use suncream during this period. Once your baby is old enough to use sun cream, choose a sensitive and hypoallergenic option.
Lastly, don’t forget about yourself! Wear a wide-brimmed hat which will help to protect your face and neck and make sure baby also has one on to protect their head too.
In addition to dressing your baby comfortably and protecting them from the sunlight, there are a few other tricks you can use to keep you and your baby comfortable while baby-wearing in the heat. Tried and tested from our founder of Bon + Bear:
"Consider freezing and using a muslin during wearing or feeding for a cooler and more relaxing experience. If you don’t have access to a fridge or freeze, just hanging a muslin over the back of your carrier (tuck it into the top rail) can help to provide shade for your baby's legs while still allowing for airflow to keep you both cool."
Following these tips can help ensure that you and your baby are as comfortable as possible during any summer heat wave. Don't let the weather discourage you from enjoying the many benefits of baby-wearing, even on the hottest days.
